Designer, author and television host Joe Ruggiero defines a 'greener' style at 1771 North Point-the Showhouse in San Francisco's Marina District. Eco-friendly furnishings from the Joe Ruggiero collection by custom manufacturer Norwalk Furniture complement the home's environmentally-conscious design/build, and bring a new style of 'trad mod' to life in the nearly 5,000 square feet of livable space.
Ruggiero outfitted the showhouse - from entrance to guest bedroom - in his furniture designs, and sheathed the versatile shapes in livable fabrics from his exclusive Sunbrella collection. "It's about dimension," says Ruggiero. "Fabrics with unique patterns and textures not only add to the feeling of the space, but also suit the traditional, but modernized profiles from Norwalk."
In the family room, Ruggiero looks to an entirely 'green' grouping called Tribeca. A top selling, flexible sectional, Tribeca features a chaise, loveseat and several armless chairs upholstered in beige, called Trax vellum, and piped in henna red, called Wired-both created by Ruggiero for Sunbrella.
Norwalk uses natural and renewable resources, as well as recycled materials in the construction of Tribeca and hundreds of other collections. Designs by Ruggiero incorporate the company's standard 10 percent soy-based foam - called Preserve, courtesy of Hickory Springs - and reclaimed wire and steel in all seating systems; all glue used on cushion components is also water-based.
Accompanying Tribeca are several Marion chairs. For occasional use or pulled up to the dining table, Marion - also shown in Trax and Wired fabric combos - boasts a mid-century design with a square back and matching boxy seat.
Moving on to the master suite, Ruggiero's Russell upholstered headboard is center stage, covered in Sunbrella's Coventry Gourd. Ample seating is provided by several chair and ottoman groupings, including his classic Barrymore, also wrapped in Coventry Gourd, and skirted Victoria, in a complementary salmon colored version of Trax.
